Street Fighter film release and critical reception

Overview

The live-action ‘Street Fighter’ reboot, directed by Kitao Sakurai and co-financed by Capcom and Legendary Entertainment, has premiered globally. The film follows fighters Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo) during the 1993 World Warrior Tournament.

Critical reception remains polarized. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a score in the 40% range, earning a ‘Rotten’ designation. Critics have cited a ‘messy script’, ‘forced comedy’, and an ‘abrupt ending’ as primary flaws. Conversely, audience approval is significantly higher, with some reports noting a Popcornmeter score above 80%. Reviewers have praised the film’s visual fidelity to the source material, its 2D anime-style flashback sequences, the chemistry between lead actors, and its use of 1990s nostalgia and easter eggs for the fighting game community.

Actress Callina Liang, who portrays Chun-Li, has provided further details regarding her preparation for the role. To achieve the necessary physical transformation within a two-month window, Liang worked with a Toronto-based personal trainer, engaging in daily stunt training and a high-calorie diet of approximately 4,000 calories per day. To achieve a credible portrayal, she also practiced Taekwondo, Muay Thai, and Wushu, and used resistance bands to improve balance. Her regimen included increasing her thigh circumference by 6.5cm. Addressing online criticism from fans on platforms like Reddit regarding whether her build matched the iconic character, Liang noted she remained committed to providing an accurate portrayal. She also noted that she and the character share the same blood type, Type A.

Liang, 26, further clarified that her high-protein bulking diet included consuming 12 eggs a day and eating meals every two hours. She noted the process was physically demanding and nearly made her ill. The film has since achieved global box office success, earning approximately $51 million worldwide.
