Student abuse allegations in Flagler County, Florida
Overview
In October 2026, law enforcement in Flagler County, Florida, arrested two educators following allegations of physical abuse involving students with disabilities.
Initially, Bryan Schewitz, a 60-year-old substitute teacher at Matanzas High School, was charged with child abuse without great bodily harm. Witnesses reported that during a behavioral episode, Schewitz used excessive force to seat a student and allegedly kicked the child, causing injury. Schewitz claimed the contact was accidental, stating, ‘He kicked me and I kicked him. So now we’re square.’
Following this, 52-year-old Kevin Adkisson of Wadsworth Elementary was arrested for the alleged assault of a 6-year-old special needs student. The incident reportedly occurred on October 16 during classroom free time after a dispute between students over a toy. Investigators allege Adkisson forcefully intervened by grabbing the student’s arm in a rough motion that caused him to swing through the air before pinning him against a wall. A paraprofessional witnessed the event and reported the child was crying under a desk and stating he could not breathe.
Adkisson was arrested in Bunnell on October 22 on two counts of child abuse without great bodily harm. He has since been released after posting a $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on November 17.
