Student Investigation into student assault investigation at Bolgatanga Girls Senior
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has launched an investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a 14-year-old student with autism at Bolgatanga Girls Senior High School in the Upper East Region. Two school watchmen were arrested and interdicted following reports that the student was targeted on four separate occasions between late June and early July 2026. The incidents reportedly took place at various campus locations, including a security post and near the dining hall. The GES Controversy has emerged regarding the school administration’s response, as they reportedly labeled the student guilty of ‘sexual misconduct’ and withdrew her boarding status for one academic year. Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch) criticized this disciplinary action, arguing that a child who is allegedly abused should be treated as a victim requiring protection rather than being sanctioned. Eduwatch has called for an immediate independent review of the school’s decision. In response, Deputy Education Minister Dr. Clement Apaak stated that the Ministry of Education is intervening to ensure the student required receives medical attention and confirmed counseling. The Ministry has also directed that sanctions will be applied in accordance with the student’s revoked boarding status be reinstated. The GES Code of Conduct continues to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and Ghanaian law. the conduct of the school authorities.
