Student deaths in Gorontalo, Indonesia

Overview

In August 2026, two separate incidents involving the deaths of university students were reported in Gorontalo, Indonesia.

On 2 August, Rizka Halid, a 25-year-old postgraduate student at Universitas Negeri Gorontalo, died after being swept away by strong currents while swimming at Pulau Bugisa. Despite rescue attempts by companions and a nearby German-owned tourist boat, Halid was declared dead upon arrival at Zainal Umar Sidiki Hospital.

On 24 August, Marcella Parioh, a 22-year-old student at Universitas Ichsan Gorontalo, was found dead in her boarding house in Gorontalo City. Police reported no immediate signs of violence or theft, and family members noted the victim had a history of heart disease. An autopsy was ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
