Student protests against Turkish Education Minister
Overview
Two university students, Nevin Tekin and Nehir Dizdar, were arrested in Istanbul after hanging a banner at Kadıköy High School demanding the resignation of National Education Minister Yusuf Tekin. A judge ruled that the banner’s message, which stated, “If there is no future for us, there is no peace for you, Yusuf Tekin resign!”, constituted a direct threat to the Minister. The arrests drew criticism from political groups and sparked demonstrations at Galatasaray University, where students used empty chairs to symbolize those detained.
Following their detention, Tekin and Dizdar were released. Upon their release, the students and members of the Workers' Party of Turkey (TİP) clarified that the protest was motivated by concerns over school safety and the risks associated with the Vocational Training Centers (MESEM) program. TİP officials criticized the government for penalizing political expression while failing to address student deaths linked to the MESEM program.
