Student protests in Mexico

Overview

Student demonstrations in Mexico have addressed diverse political and social issues. In early October, students in Puebla and Chihuahua organized rallies to express solidarity with Palestine and protest international repression, with organizers in Puebla calling for an end to what they described as “genocide in Gaza”.

By late October, the focus of student unrest shifted toward domestic educational concerns. In Toluca, members of the National Federation of Revolutionary Students Rafael Ramírez (FNERRR) petitioned the government regarding severe infrastructure deficiencies in schools. Meanwhile, in Morelia, demonstrations by students from the Escuela Normal Indígena de Michoacán (ENIM) regarding the availability of teaching positions escalated into violence, involving the seizure of public transport and the burning of a vehicle.
