Sudanese diplomatic tension regarding UN attendance

Overview

Sudanese de facto leader Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan was unable to attend the UN General Assembly in the United States due to a missing visa. UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed concern over the incident, urging the United States to facilitate the participation of all delegations, while the U.S. Department of State declined to comment on specific cases.

Following the visa denial, Darfur Governor Minni Arko Minnawi accused unnamed international and regional entities of practicing ‘dirty diplomacy’ to prevent Sudanese leadership from addressing the United Nations. Minnawi stated that while Sudan does not oppose the United States as a nation, certain individuals within American decision-making institutions are ‘hiding the truth’ regarding the country.

In his remarks, Minnawi also addressed the ongoing conflict, advocating for an immediate ceasefire to address humanitarian needs in El Fasher and criticizing the international community for a ‘double standard’ regarding the provision of arms to Sudanese forces.
