Suffolk County street takeover crackdowns
Overview
Law enforcement in Suffolk County, Long Island, has conducted multiple operations to combat illegal street takeovers. In mid-August, the Suffolk County Police Department’s Street Takeover Task Force arrested 15 individuals following incidents in Islip, Patchogue, and Medford. During the Medford operation, participants engaged in drag racing and dangerous stunts, resulting in the impoundment of seven vehicles.
In September, a larger-scale takeover occurred in Yaphank on Express Drive North, involving approximately 50 vehicles and over 100 spectators. Following this incident, police charged four men from Connecticut with offenses including unlawful speed contests and sideshows. One individual also faced charges for reckless driving and attempting to flee from officers. Authorities impounded a truck, a trailer, and a race car involved in the Yaphank event.
