Rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts following disasters in Sumatra are progressing, with a recent focus on stabilizing affected regions and accelerating housing construction. As of early October 2026, 39 out of 53 affected regencies and cities have returned to normal status, characterized by restored national access, operational basic services, and resumed market activities. To expedite recovery, President Prabowo Subianto has ordered that the construction timeline for permanent housing (Huntap) be reduced from three years to two years. This directive aims to assist affected communities in rebuilding their lives more rapidly. Current data indicates that over 184,000 homes have been damaged. While temporary housing (Huntara) has reached 99.8 percent of its target with 20,770 units completed, permanent housing progress stands at approximately 3.26 percent, with 2,085 units completed out of a target of 57,027 and another 1,862 currently under construction. In North Sumatra, the provincial government is accelerating a 2026 house renovation program. Through the Self-Help Housing Stimulant Assistance (BSPS) program, the province aims to realize 15,011 units, a significant increase from the 1,982 units provided in 2025. This includes 3,411 units in settlement areas, 4,505 in urban areas, and 7,065 in rural areas, with 9,068 units already in the processing stage. Additionally, the government is working toward completing 919 permanent housing units in North Sumatra by the end of 2026. While most areas have stabilized, eleven regencies and cities still require special attention. Specifically, Central Tapanuli and North Tapanuli continue to manage infrastructure repairs and administrative tasks, such as the completion of village offices. These developments follow earlier efforts by the Post-Disaster Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Acceleration Task Force (Satgas PRR) to relocate schools and the central government’s school revitalization program. Previous concerns raised by environmental organization Walhi Sumatra Barat regarding structural issues in spatial governance, such as deforestation and inadequate river basin management, remain part of the broader context of disaster prevention and management in the region.
