Sumedang Vice Regent misconduct investigation

An investigation was launched into allegations of sexual harassment, confinement, and physical assault involving the Vice Regent of Sumedang, M Fajar Aldila. The victim, a personal secretary identified as RY, reported that the incidents took place at the official residence. The allegations suggest the involvement of the Vice Regent, his wife, and a member of the Indonesian House of Representatives. In response, West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi established a provincial investigation team to conduct an objective inquiry.

As the situation progressed, concerns emerged regarding bureaucratic intimidation, with reports that the victim faced threats of being transferred to a remote district. In response to the escalating controversy, twenty-two branches of the Indonesian Advocates Association (Peradi) pledged to monitor the case to ensure ‘equality before the law’. Additionally, the PDI Perjuangan faction of the Sumedang Regional House of Representatives called for a transparent legal process and offered legal assistance to ensure the protection of the victim’s rights.

Following the initial inquiry, the West Java Inspectorate’s findings failed to reach a definitive conclusion, leading to criticism that the process was a ‘mere formality’. Governor Dedi Mulyadi noted that the internal clarification process reached a stalemate because all parties involved denied the allegations. This lack of clarity has prompted local activists, including Zenni Bima, to question the credibility of the provincial bureaucracy and demand the full disclosure of investigative results.
