Suppression of Hijas del Amor Misericordioso

Overview

In July 2025 the Archdiocese of Madrid placed the public association Hijas del Amor Misericordioso (HAM) under a commissariat, removing its leader María Milagrosa Pérez Caballero (Marimí) from governance after accusations of sexual abuse, abuse of conscience and sectarian practices. Following a year‑long ecclesiastical intervention and a recommendation from the Tribunal of the Rota, the archbishop formally suppressed the association on 28 July 2026, concluding it could not meet viability requirements.

Three days later, Cardinal José Cobo Cano issued a decree dissolving HAM’s canonical status as a public association of the faithful. The Vatican’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith continues canonical proceedings, while Spanish civil authorities are reviewing related complaints. HAM, with about 120 sisters in three communities, intends to appeal the decree, though an appeal does not automatically suspend the suppression. No convictions have been recorded, and all parties retain the presumption of innocence pending further investigation.
