Surabaya debt‑collector clash and PSHT protest
Overview
On July 30‑31 2026 a violent encounter in Surabaya between traditional silat fighters and the debt‑collector group Mata Elang escalated into a large‑scale protest by the pencak silat organization Persaudaraan Setia Hati Terate (PSHT). After collectors attempted to tow a vehicle, a collector stabbed two valet officers. Police detained the suspect (“S”) and raided the debt‑collector headquarters on Jalan Teuku Umar, seizing weapons including golf clubs, a machete, a golok, pliers and an iron pipe.
The following day thousands of PSHT members marched to demand arrests of all debt‑collector members involved. Police chief AKBP Rosyid Hartanto deployed about 300 officers, including water‑cannon‑equipped vehicles, to guard the police headquarters and the debt‑collector office. Protesters attempted to breach barricades on Jalan Kartini, throwing bottles and stones; officers kept the crowd from entering the street and a member of the Indonesian National Armed Forces was wounded.
Police emphasized a persuasive, non‑violent approach while maintaining a firm security perimeter. PSHT leader Bondan warned that if the remaining perpetrator is not captured, the group could mobilise up to 10,000 members for a larger action. These developments show a rapid escalation from a localized violent encounter to a large‑scale public protest and intensified police operations in Surabaya.
