Suriname Civil War war crimes trial in The Hague
Overview
A former member of the Surinamese National Army, a Dutch national residing in Amsterdam, is facing trial in The Hague for alleged war crimes committed during the Surinamese Civil War. The prosecution alleges the defendant was involved in the killing of multiple civilians, including children, during military ‘cleansing actions’ in the Brokopondo district near Brownsweg in mid-1987.
The investigation followed the suspect’s own admissions regarding the killings. However, the legal proceedings have faced complications. A recent witness testified that the defendant may have fabricated his incriminating statements, and investigators have struggled to find corroborating evidence.
Due to these challenges and the defense’s request to terminate the case, a Dutch court has ruled that the trial of the 60-year-old former officer will be delayed for at least one year. The Public Prosecutor's Office is currently seeking legal assistance from Surinamese authorities to attempt to reach a breakthrough in the investigation.
