Suriname war crimes trial against former military official delayed

A Dutch court in The Hague has ruled that the trial of Abdoel L., a 60-year-old former Surinamese military officer, will be delayed for at least another year. The defendant is suspected of committing war crimes during the Surinamese Civil War (1986–1992), specifically the summary execution of multiple civilians, including young children, during military operations against the Jungle Commando.

The prosecution alleges these killings occurred during purification actions in areas such as Brownsweg and the Brokopondo region. While the case relies heavily on self-incriminating statements made by Abdoel L., investigators have struggled to find corroborating evidence. A recent witness testified that the defendant may have fabricated his incriminating stories.

Defense counsel has requested that the case be terminated, arguing that the investigation is at a standstill. The Public Prosecutor's Office stated that they are intensifying efforts to obtain legal assistance from Surinamese authorities to seek a breakthrough in the investigation.
