Suriname youth employment and community project
Overview
The Suriname Ministry of Youth Development and Sport (JOS) initiated a vacation employment project to provide work experience and skill development for young people. Initially, the program aimed to prepare 750 participants aged 16 to 25 for a ten-day project involving litter removal and assistance at care institutions. High demand was noted early on, with over 1,000 youths registering for the positions.
By the official launch of the ‘Krin Kondre’ initiative, the program’s scope expanded to target approximately 1,300 young people nationwide. The first phase saw roughly 300 participants deployed across the Wanica, Saramacca, Coronie, and Commewijne districts. In Wanica, participants worked under the Ministry of Public Works and Spatial Planning to clear litter from roads and school grounds. The project includes training in safety, discipline, and social responsibility, with plans to include 50 youths with special needs at social institutions starting in mid-September.
