Sustainability and environmental initiatives in Greece

In Chalkida, the Chamber of Euboea and the Association of Lessees of Public and Private School Canteens of Euboea held an event regarding ‘Sustainable School Canteens: New Institutional Framework, Healthy Nutrition & New Business Opportunities’. The discussion centered on a new institutional framework and the potential for partnerships between school canteens and local producers to promote healthy eating and local entrepreneurship.

Further environmental efforts have been undertaken by students and educators across Greece. In Chalkida, a tree-planting activity was organized along the Lelantos River by the Municipality of Chalkidiki, the Afraiti Owned Forest Forestry Cooperative, and the Evia Volunteer Nursery. On the island of Halki, the ‘Every day, a cleaner Halki!’ initiative involved cleaning activities at Pontamos beach and near the Temple of Agia Thekla. This project also explores circular economy concepts, such as repurposing seaweed into biodegradable material for sunglasses frames, supported by the European CAROUSEL program.
