Sustainable viticulture and soil management research

Overview

Research and development initiatives in the viticulture sector are focusing on sustainable soil management and the repurposing of vineyard waste.

In one project, the winery Terras Gauda, in collaboration with Viña Concha y Toro and the University of Vigo, completed a four-year study titled ‘Rebiovines’. This project successfully transformed grape pomace into a liquid bio-stimulant that can be applied via drip irrigation. Testing on Albariño and Caíño vineyards indicated improvements in soil microbiota, plant health, and productivity, while maintaining or improving wine quality.

Concurrently, the University of Vigo and Inorde are working on the European ‘Viti-Valmo’ project to enhance climate change resilience. This initiative utilizes biochar produced from vineyard waste, such as uprooted vines, through a mobile pilot-scale furnace. This method aims to improve water retention and carbon storage directly in the field. Trials are being conducted in Galicia at the ‘Pé Redondo’ plot, as part of a broader European network including Portugal and France.
