SUSTAINCrop international bioeconomy project

Overview

The SUSTAINCrop project, funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe program, is an international initiative designed to measure the environmental footprint of industrial crops used in the bioeconomy. The project aims to develop digital tools to provide data for farmers, companies, and policymakers to improve the sustainability of biomaterials used for plastics, fibers, and chemicals.

Coordination for the project involves a network of scientists from Latin America and Europe. In Latin America, the Technological Institute of Chascomús (INTECh) in Argentina leads the Knowledge Group coordination, working with institutions in Guatemala and Colombia. Global coordination is managed by the Hungarian consultancy INNOMINE, with participation from several European nations including Denmark, Greece, Germany, Belgium, and Spain.

Parallel agricultural research in Argentina, such as studies by the Universidad Nacional de Rosario, has also focused on optimizing soybean yields through management adjustments like reducing row spacing to improve efficiency for producers.
