Coastal bathing bans due to water contamination

Bathing bans have been implemented at various coastal locations due to bacterial contamination in seawater.

In Izola, Slovenia, swimming was prohibited at the Pri Svetilniku cove and the Naravno kopališče Delfin after routine monitoring on August 10 revealed Escherichia coli levels exceeding National Institute of Public Health guidelines. Authorities posted on-site warnings following the detection of the bacteria, which serves as an indicator of fecal contamination.

In Sveti Vlas, Bulgaria, a ban was placed on the ‘Istok’ beach after testing by the Burgas Regional Health Inspection revealed Escherichia coli and enterococci levels between four and ten times above permissible limits. This contamination was linked to a technical failure and a burst pipe at a private wastewater treatment plant in the Elenite resort area. Local officials are addressing the accident, noting that the facility is struggling with the volume of residents and tourists. The ban will remain until two consecutive water samples confirm safe standards.

In Herceg Novi, Montenegro, swimming bans were issued for several beaches in the Baošići area after analyses conducted between August 17 and August 21 showed E. coli and I. enterococci levels exceeding prescribed limits. The Institute of Marine Biology is performing emergency sampling. Local health centers have reported patients experiencing symptoms including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. The incident has brought attention to issues regarding uncontrolled urban construction and inadequate sewage infrastructure along the coast.
