Sweden national litter cleanup initiatives

Overview

The organization Håll Sverige Rent organized the ninth annual ‘Hela Sverige plockar skräp’ (All of Sweden picks up litter) on September 20, coinciding with the United Nations’ World Cleanup Day. Prior to the event, data from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency indicated that a one-kilometer walk in a Swedish city averages approximately 1,000 pieces of litter, with 93 percent consisting of single-use products.

Following the initiative, reports indicated that 144,686 people across Sweden collected a total of 233 tons of trash. In Örebro County specifically, 4,759 participants collected over 7.6 tons of litter, with the highest volume of waste recovered in the Örebro municipality. Joakim Brodahl, vice CEO of Håll Sverige Rent, noted that while community engagement remains high, political action is required to prevent littering at the source.
