Sweden continues to face a significant surge in wild boar populations, with estimates exceeding 570,000 before the hunting season. This increase, driven by mild winters and abundant food, has resulted in substantial agricultural damage and a rise in traffic accidents. While 2024 regulations sought to facilitate the sale of wild boar meat, hunters maintain that high administrative costs and mandatory testing for trichinella and cesium limit economic viability. Adding to the regional wildlife management challenges, African swine fever (ASF) has emerged in southeastern Finland, resulting in the deaths of 19 wild boars. In response, hunters in Ostrobothnia are mobilizing to prepare for potential spread. The Finnish Food Authority (Ruokavirasto) has implemented strict containment measures, including movement restrictions in affected areas such as Virolahti and Miehikkälä.
