Swedish Left Party controversy over Palestinian prisoners

The Swedish Left Party (Vänsterpartiet) has faced scrutiny regarding its communications with Palestinian prisoners and its stance on the Israeli judicial system.

Initial reports from the newspaper Expressen alleged that all members of the party’s parliamentary group and EU representatives sent solidarity letters to Palestinian prisoners, including those convicted of serious terrorist offenses. Party leader Nooshi Dagostar denied these claims, stating that “Expressen has published false information,” and clarified that only two individuals were involved in the campaign. The party subsequently apologized for any misunderstanding, noting that inaccuracies in the reporting may have stemmed from information provided by the Palestinian Authority.

As the controversy progressed, party secretary Maria Forsberg addressed concerns regarding the reliability of the Israeli legal system, noting the difficulties faced by Palestinian prisoners. The situation has intensified broader political discussions in Sweden concerning the party’s positions on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and follows previous instances where the party removed candidates over allegations of praising militant groups.
