Swiss corporate economic trends 2026

Overview

In 2026, Switzerland experienced a divergent economic landscape characterized by a record number of new company registrations alongside a significant surge in business insolvencies. Between January and September, the country saw 41,716 new startups, a 2.1 percent increase from the previous year, with the canton of Zug and the region of Uri showing notable activity.

However, business bankruptcies rose sharply, with 11,412 cases recorded in the first nine months of the year, representing a 36.5 percent increase over 2025. Projections suggest total corporate insolvencies could reach a historic high of 15,000 cases by the end of 2026.

Experts attribute the rising insolvency rates to high energy costs, increasing interest rates, and economic uncertainty. Additionally, Jan Möllmann of Allianz Trade Switzerland noted that a new insolvency law implemented in 2025 has acted as a driver by “mechanically” increasing the number of companies entering proceedings. Despite these individual business struggles, the national GDP is forecasted to grow between 1.5% and 1.9% for the year.
