Syrian-Israeli border conflict escalation

Overview

Tensions between Syria and Israel have escalated, with Syrian representatives warning the UN Security Council that the region is on the verge of a “regional war that would spare no one.” Syria’s UN envoy, Ibrahim Olabi, cited Israeli airstrikes against the Abu Al-Duhur airbase and incursions into Syrian territory as primary drivers of instability. He further criticized Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz regarding the indefinite presence of troops on the Syrian side of Mount Hermon, labeling it a “blatant defiance of international legitimacy.”

Following these warnings, a UN investigative commission reported to the Human Rights Council that Israeli military operations in the Quneitra and Daraa provinces may constitute war crimes. Commission member Fionuala Ní Aolain stated that Israeli activities are evolving into a permanent military presence. The report documents routine land incursions, patrols, raids, and house searches that disrupt civilian life. Specifically, investigators noted that 49 Syrian nationals, including two children, have been detained; some were reportedly transferred into Israeli territory and held in isolation without access to legal counsel or family, raising fears of torture.

Israeli authorities have rejected these allegations, describing the investigation as a “politically motivated campaign.” Israel maintains that it has no territorial claims in Syria and asserts that its military presence is limited to a temporary security buffer zone intended for border protection.
