Taika Waititi Star Wars film development hiatus

Overview

Director Taika Waititi has confirmed that his long-developing, untitled Star Wars film project is being placed ‘on ice’ indefinitely. The announcement was made during a press junket for his new film, ‘Klara and the Sun’.

Waititi stated that he and screenwriter Tony McNamara are shifting their focus to a different, undisclosed project. While the project has not been formally cancelled, the production is currently suspended as Waititi and Lucasfilm work on other endeavors. The film had been in development since May 2020, following Waititi’s work on ‘The Mandalorian’.

Despite previous indications from former Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy that the project was ‘still somewhat alive’, the film had faced numerous development delays and scheduling conflicts. This pause contributes to ongoing uncertainty regarding Lucasfilm’s cinematic release schedule.
