Taiwan educator recognition and policy developments

Taiwanese educational authorities and government leaders have conducted a series of ceremonies to recognize excellence in teaching and address systemic challenges within the profession.

Initially, the Ministry of Education honored 57 individuals with the ‘Excellence in Special Education Personnel’ award. During Teacher's Day celebrations, President Lai Ching-te reaffirmed government commitments to reducing administrative burdens and promoting AI-driven education. Local leaders in Chiayi City and Keelung also announced measures to support teachers, such as increasing honorariums and reducing class sizes.

Recent Teachers' Day activities have expanded these efforts. In Keelung, Mayor Hsu Kuo-liang presided over an awards ceremony for 242 educators, including Shiduo Award recipients, and issued gift vouchers to nearly 4,000 employees. To further alleviate teaching burdens, the city announced plans to reduce public elementary school class sizes from 29 to 28 students.

Across the island, schools held various commemorative events, including traditional ‘Shuxiu’ rituals, tea ceremonies, and art competitions to honor instructors. Concurrently, academic discussions at National Taiwan Normal University continue to address systemic issues. Experts, including Professor Huang Kun-hui, have highlighted the impact of high salaries in the technology sector on teacher shortages and emphasized the need to balance institutional authority with individual rights to prevent excessive litigation and improve the professional environment.
