Overview
Tajikistan’s agricultural sector has experienced a significant shift from expansion to production challenges. Initially, the country focused on increasing its role as a major producer and exporter of dried fruits, particularly apricots, utilizing approximately 200 varieties and both traditional and industrial processing methods.
However, domestic harvests have since declined. In the first half of 2026, fruit harvests fell by 13.1% compared to the previous year, with apricot production specifically dropping by 48,600 tonnes due to spring frosts and heavy rains. This decline, alongside a 13.3% drop in domestic wheat production, has increased the country’s dependency on food imports. To address these shortages, Tajikistan has increased wheat imports from Kazakhstan and imported 79,100 tonnes of fresh fruit, berries, and melons from suppliers including Pakistan, China, Ecuador, Iran, and Afghanistan.
