AS Monaco midfielder Takumi Minamino is nearing a return to competitive football following a long-term injury. Minamino has been sidelined since December 2025 after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee. In early September 2026, Minamino was included in the 22-man squad for a Ligue 1 match against Paris Saint-Germain, an event Monaco described as a “long-awaited homecoming.” While he was part of the traveling squad, he remained an unused substitute. Manager Filipe Luís noted the need for a gradual fitness progression. On September 18, 2026, Minamino returned to the bench for a Ligue 1 fixture against RC Lens. Although he did not see playing time during Monaco’s 2-1 victory, his inclusion is considered a significant step in his recovery. Luís has maintained a cautious approach toward Minamino’s full reintegration into the starting lineup, despite the player’s progressive return to training and squad involvement since August. On October 3, 2026, Minamino made his competitive return to the pitch, starting in a friendly match against Italian side Pisa SC. He played 57 minutes, demonstrating his recovery through active attacking plays and powerful volleys. Manager Filipe Luís noted that the recent international break provided a valuable two-week training period for the player to regain match fitness. Luís expressed his intention to utilize Minamino as much as possible, citing his versatility and intelligence on the pitch. Following this, Minamino made his official competitive return in a UEFA Conference League match against CSKA Sofia on October 15. Marking his first competitive start in 298 days, he played a pivotal role in Monaco’s 2-1 victory, contributing to the buildup of both goals before being substituted in the 59th minute.
