Taliban morality police enforcement against women
Overview
Reports indicate increasing enforcement of morality laws by the Taliban’s Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice across Afghanistan.
In Herat, allegations surfaced that morality police detained women for improper attire and demanded payments, ranging from 20,000 to 30,000 afghanis, for their release. A ministry spokesperson rejected these extortion claims, stating the ministry had resolved over 100 cases involving women in the preceding month.
In Kabul, operations in the Taymani neighborhood resulted in the detention of between eight and 20 women and girls. Witnesses and social media footage described officials using physical force to compel women into unmarked white vans. These crackdowns follow the adoption of strict new morality laws, including regulations regarding women’s voices in public spaces.
