Tam Mei-kam funeral and estate dispute

Following the death of Tam Mei-kam, mother of the late Cantopop singer Anita Mui, a dispute has emerged regarding her funeral arrangements. Tam passed away on August 30 after reportedly collapsing at her residence in Causeway Bay.

Her eldest son, Michael Mui, announced his intention to manage the funeral proceedings and suggested using Anita Mui’s trust fund to cover costs. This claim has been contested by a longtime friend, Poon Siu-man, who asserts that a will exists designating Tam’s grandchildren as the responsible parties for the funeral. Michael Mui has rejected these claims and threatened legal injunctions.

In a subsequent development, Chan Mei-kam (also known as Mei Ma) held a press conference to announce a funeral plan costing approximately 1.5 million HKD. This plan includes a permanent grave at Tseung Kwan O Chinese Permanent Cemetery and various religious services. Chan, who stated he is currently unemployed, denied allegations of financial misconduct and dismissed claims that the grand scale of the funeral contradicts his mother’s wishes, arguing she was not in a clear state of mind in her later years. Family members and associates continue to challenge his authority, citing conflicting reports over whether the deceased intended for a low-key affair.
