Tamaulipas penal code reforms for support obligations

Overview

The Tamaulipas State Congress has approved reforms to the Penal Code to increase penalties for failing to meet food and support obligations. Under the new legislation, prison sentences for individuals who unjustifiably fail to provide essential resources to economically dependent persons can increase by up to one-third.

When the victims belong to vulnerable groups, such as senior citizens, pregnant women, or persons with disabilities, the maximum sentence can rise from six years to eight years. The reform also mandates fines of up to 200 times the daily value of the Unit of Measure and Update (UMA) and requires the full repayment of all owed amounts. The initiative was expanded during legislative analysis to include broader protections for various legal dependents following recommendations from the Judiciary and the State Attorney General’s Office.
