Tamil Nadu educational infrastructure and administration

Tamil Nadu is undergoing various developments regarding its educational infrastructure and administration. Under the centrally funded Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, the state has become a leading beneficiary in South India for digital learning tools, securing approvals for thousands of ICT labs and smart classrooms between the 2021–22 and 2025–26 academic years. However, officials report that central funding has been delayed for three years due to alleged non-implementation of the National Education Policy, forcing the state to cover maintenance and salary costs from its own budget. Project director M. Rathi stated, “The state is funding the programme from its own budget because central assistance has not arrived for three years.”

In addition to digital expansion, the state is addressing administrative and physical infrastructure needs. The Directorate of Elementary Education has introduced new verification processes for teacher certificates to ensure qualification authenticity. Meanwhile, an assessment of government arts and science colleges has identified significant deficits, including a need for approximately 1,700 new classrooms, modern laboratories, and improved sanitation facilities.
