Since early May 2026, Tamil Nadu has experienced alternating periods of intense rainfall, strong winds, and extreme heat. Following a period of heatwaves in July, weather patterns shifted toward unsettled conditions in August. In mid-August, the Regional Meteorological Centre forecast heavy rains for northern districts, including Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Villupuram, and Tiruvannamalai. Between August 17 and August 19, a weak low-pressure circulation along the coast triggered forecasts for heavy rainfall and thunder in Chengalpattu, Villupuram, and Cuddalore. While moderate rain was expected in areas such as Madurai and Dindigul, inland districts faced rising maximum temperatures. By August 21, a wet spell was forecast to last through August 27, driven by a cyclonic circulation over the Chhattisgarh-north Odisha region. As of August 24, the Chennai Meteorological Centre predicted rain across several parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, with heavy rain and winds of 40-50 kmph expected in hilly areas of Coimbatore and the Nilgiris. By August 27, the India Meteorological Department predicted light to moderate rainfall across seven districts, though northern inland temperatures were expected to rise by up to 3 degrees Celsius through August 30. In early September, weather patterns remained unsettled. By September 5, the Regional Meteorological Centre forecasted light to moderate rain and thunderstorms across various parts of the state, including the Western Ghats and southern districts such as Madurai, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, and Virudhunagar. This activity was attributed to a cyclonic circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal and a low-pressure area extending from south interior Karnataka through Tamil Nadu to the Gulf of Mannar. In mid-September, weather instability continued. By late September, the South-West monsoon remained active across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, bringing forecasts of rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds.
