Tamil Nadu mining regulation crackdown

In July 2026 the Tamil Nadu government empowered its mining director to stop the inter‑state transport of construction materials, a move aimed at tightening control over mineral extraction and distribution. Later that month the state announced a comprehensive digital monitoring platform for the Natural Resources Department. The system links a digital weighbridge to an online portal that records every load of extracted minerals, seeking to curb illegal mining, improve compliance, and raise mining‑related revenue from roughly Rs 4 500 crore to between Rs 6 500 crore and Rs 9 000 crore. The rollout follows inspections that closed 67 stone quarries and found violations at 155 of 431 sites, resulting in Rs 78 crore in penalties. Alongside the monitoring initiative, Tamil Nadu created a Rs 50 crore revolving fund for disaster preparedness and established a Rs 55 crore State Institute of Disaster Management to support training, research, and policy development.
