Tamil Nadu political alliance shifts and by-elections
Overview
Political dynamics in Tamil Nadu are undergoing significant shifts driven by changing party alliances and upcoming by-elections. The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is reportedly consolidating a major coalition including the Indian Union Muslim League, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, and the Congress party, which analysts suggest could command nearly 50% of the vote bank. This contrasts with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), which faces challenges after deciding to contest without major allies such as the Left parties or Congress.
In the Madurantakam and Dharapuram constituencies, by-elections have been triggered by the resignations of AIADMK MLAs Maragatham Kumaravel and P Sathyabama, who joined the TVK. CPI(M) State Secretary P. Shanmugam has criticized these by-elections, describing them as an election ‘imposed on the people’ rather than a natural electoral process, and alleging that horse-trading occurred during the MLAs' transition to the TVK.
While the Left parties previously indicated an intention to support the ruling alliance, they have now announced they will contest the Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly by-elections independently under a Left Front. The CPI(M) plans to field a candidate in Madurantakam, while the CPI will contest Dharapuram. Party leaders clarified that contesting against all existing political alliances will not affect their continued ‘outside support’ for the TVK-led state government. The Left parties intend to use the campaign to critique the TVK government’s administrative and economic policies during its first 120 days in power.
Candidate details are expected to be introduced in Chennai on September 15. The deadline for filing nominations is September 16, with voting scheduled for October 6 and results expected on October 9. The Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) has also declared its intention to field candidates in these contests.
