Tamil Nadu private school corruption investigation

Overview

An investigation is underway into an alleged corruption scheme involving former Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi and several others. The case, initiated following complaints from the Private Schools Association, alleges that money was collected from over 1,000 private schools under the pretext of securing permanent recognition, administrative clearances, and various planning approvals.

Following the Madras High Court’s dismissal of his anticipatory bail application, the Chennai Police’s Central Crime Branch arrested Poyyamozhi. He has since been remanded to judicial custody at Puzhal prison. While initial reports cited a ₹100-crore scheme, investigators have suggested the total amount involved could reach ₹400 crore. The allegations suggest that between 2021 and 2026, payments were collected from school managements under the guise of party contributions in exchange for statutory approvals and school upgradations.

In addition to the police investigation, the Enforcement Directorate has launched a separate probe under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. DMK President M. K. Stalin and other party leaders have condemned the arrest, labeling it a “political vendetta” by the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government. Poyyamozhi has denied all allegations and is seeking to quash the FIR.
