In mid‑July 2026 the newly elected Tamil Nadu administration under Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay began drafting a Vetri Tamizhagam Vision Document, directing every department to prepare detailed vision papers and a White Paper on public finances that highlighted rising debt, persistent revenue deficits and higher interest outlays. On 5 August 2026 Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson (also referred to as Mary Wilson) presented the state’s first full budget for FY 2026‑27. The plan earmarked ₹44,527 crore for school education, including a ₹2,132 crore modernisation programme for 3,734 government schools and a ₹129 crore “Super Clean, Super Campus” scheme for 10,000 schools. An agriculture budget was scheduled for 6 August, and a Climate Budget earmarked up to ₹3,000 crore for coastal erosion control and wetland restoration. The budget also unveiled a ten‑pillar “Vetri Tamilagam” vision aiming for a $1.5 trillion economy by 2036 and introduced a new annual Kaithiyé Millath award, which drew criticism from the Hindu Munnani. The session proceeded without audible protest from opposition members, though protest; opposition leader Udhayanidhi Stalin was arrested and released before the budget and former chief minister budget, while M.
