Rays lead ALDS 1-0 after defeating Yankees in Game 1

Overview

The Tampa Bay Rays clinched the American League East division title and the No. 1 seed in the American League, finishing the season with a 96-61 record. This achievement earned them home-field advantage and a bye during the Wild Card Series.

As the postseason began, the Rays dealt with roster injuries. Starting pitcher Shane McClanahan was ruled out for the American League Division Series (ALDS) due to left forearm tightness, though relief pitchers Tyler Wells and Garrett Cleavinger showed potential to return despite similar issues.

On October 3, the Rays took a 1-0 lead in the ALDS by defeating the New York Yankees in Game 1 at Tropicana Field. Starting pitcher Drew Rasmussen delivered a dominant performance, pitching eight innings and recording 10 strikeouts. Rasmussen held the Yankees hitless through seven innings, conceding only a double in the eighth. The game’s lone run arrived in the third inning via a solo home run by Jonathan Aranda off Gerrit Cole. Closer Brian Baker secured the shutout in the ninth, allowing only one hit to finalize the victory.
