Tanzania economic growth and trade expansion

Overview

Tanzania is experiencing broad economic growth characterized by rising exports, increased credit, and strengthened trade infrastructure.

In the year ending July 2026, exports grew by 16.5 percent to nearly USD 19.98 billion, largely propelled by a 37.4 percent surge in gold exports. This period also saw significant expansion in bank financing for sectors such as transport, communication, mining, and agriculture. Regionally, Tanzania has focused on strengthening bilateral trade with Malawi through initiatives aimed at joint value addition and shared supply chains.

Fiscal reforms and administrative shifts have further bolstered the economy. The government reported saving 13.77 billion Shillings between 2019 and 2022 by managing cargo clearance through state institutions, such as the Government Procurement Services Agency (GPSA) and the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC), instead of private agents.

Revenue collection remains strong; between July and September 2026, the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) collected 10.65 trillion Shillings, exceeding its target by 107.49 percent. This was supported by over 1,100 operations to curb smuggling and the conclusion of 130 tax evasion investigations valued at 331.15 billion Shillings.

In the mineral sector, Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba has directed the Ministry of Minerals to enhance management to align with the 2050 national development vision. This includes a legal requirement to allocate 10 percent of mineral revenues to research, a threshold that has already reached 16 percent in certain areas.
