Tanzania rural electrification initiatives
Overview
Tanzania has initiated several steps toward its goal of completing rural electrification by 2030. The Tanzania Rural Energy Agency (REA) first established a commitment to expand electricity distribution to all sub-villages to stimulate socio-economic development and local production.
Following this, Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi launched the LastMile Connection Financing Scheme, a partnership between the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) and CRDB Bank. This scheme provides credit options to assist citizens with connection costs. As part of this initiative, a five-district pilot program was ordered to help achieve a target of 100,000 new connections annually. The Vice-President also directed that peri-urban residents receive lower connection rates to align with national energy objectives.
