In Taubaté, São Paulo, 23-year-old medical student Bruno Hashimura San Juliano was shot and killed following a traffic dispute on Avenida do Povo. The suspect, 28-year-old military firefighter Marcos Paulo Fujarra de Oliveira, was arrested at the scene. While the defense claims the shooting was an act of self-defense involving a silver object, witnesses suggested the firefighter may have broken the victim’s car window before firing. Initially, the Court of Justice of São Paulo granted de Oliveira provisional liberty with conditions, including nighttime house arrest on weekends, a prohibition on contacting the victim’s family, and the suspension of his firearm permit. However, a subsequent judicial ruling by Justice Gilda Alves Barbosa Diodatti ordered his preventive detention. The court stated the detention was necessary to maintain social order and protect a witness from potential coercion. Authorities have since indicted de Oliveira for qualified homicide, citing a futile motive and the victim’s inability to defend himself. Due to Brazilian electoral laws that prohibit the arrest of voters during the election period, the warrant for his preventive arrest ~~can~~ could only be executed after Tuesday, October 6. 6, at 5:00 PM. Following the expiration of these legal restrictions, de Oliveira’s defense attorney stated that the suspect intends to surrender to police voluntarily. The victim, a fourth-semester medical student at the University of Taubaté, leaves behind a two-year-old child.
