Tax evasion investigations in Riga

Overview

Authorities in Riga have initiated legal proceedings against business officials for large-scale tax evasion schemes.

Initially, a construction and timber entrepreneur faced prosecution in the Riga City Court for allegedly accumulating a 250,000 euro debt to the state. The scheme reportedly utilized companies that submitted timely declarations to the State Revenue Service while intentionally failing to transfer funds to the state budget.

Subsequent investigations by the Tax and Customs Police revealed broader fraudulent activities involving fictitious VAT transactions. In one instance, a building maintenance company chairman allegedly used fake companies in Hungary to conceal profits, resulting in an avoided income tax of 332,672 euros. A second case involved a metal wholesale company using similar methods to hide profits throughout 2022. In these cases, assets have been seized and legal proceedings regarding coercive measures against the entities have commenced.
