Telangana agricultural electricity and irrigation crisis
Overview
Farmers in Telangana have initiated protests across multiple districts, including Nizamabad, Suryapet, and Palamuru, to demand uninterrupted and high-quality electricity. Demonstrators have staged sit-ins at substations and highways, expressing concerns that irregular power supply and a lack of canal irrigation water threaten crops during critical growth stages and hinder their ability to repay agricultural loans.
As the situation persists, particularly in the Adilabad district, the agricultural sector faces compounded risks from power outages and drought conditions linked to the El Niño effect. To manage irrigation during frequent outages, some farmers have resorted to renting generators, which has increased operational costs for small and marginal farmers. While there are concerns regarding a potential fall in cotton yields this Kharif season, some reports suggest reduced yields could drive market prices above the Minimum Support Price. However, access to water remains difficult as irrigation officials prioritize water storage for drinking needs.
