Telangana launches ₹200-crore electric auto conversion plan

The Telangana government has launched the Telangana Autorickshaw Electric Conversion Scheme, allocating ₹200 crore to transition urban transport toward net-zero carbon emissions as part of the ‘Telangana Rising Vision 2047’ plan.

The first phase of this initiative targets 18,766 petrol and diesel autorickshaws within the Telangana Core Urban Region (CURE), comprising 11,254 diesel and 7,512 petrol vehicles. Eligible owners can either retrofit existing vehicles by replacing engines with AIS-123 standard electric kits—offering fixed or swappable battery systems—or scrap old vehicles to purchase new electric three-wheelers. The government provides financial assistance of up to ₹1.5 lakh per vehicle, applied directly to the on-road price through approved dealers.

While drivers have welcomed the subsidies for reducing pollution and operational costs, the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation’s (TGSRTC) separate proposal to introduce its own e-autorickshaws for last-mile connectivity continues to face opposition. Auto drivers' unions and gig worker groups argue the plan threatens livelihoods, particularly following the Mahalakshmi scheme providing free bus travel for women. Critics have also cited the technical failure of existing TGSRTC services, noting that approximately 60 Vajra mini-buses are currently out of operation.
