Political tensions in Telangana have escalated following a series of confrontations between the ruling Congress party and the opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). The dispute originated from controversial remarks by BRS MLCs targeting Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar’s Dalit identity and a subsequent “purification ritual” involving turmeric water conducted by BRS activists near former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao’s farmhouse. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy characterized these actions as a conspiracy to promote untouchability, while BRS leaders denied the allegations. The conflict moved into the Legislative Assembly, where BRS legislators filed a breach of privilege motion against the Chief Minister, alleging he used a “fake social media post” to make misleading statements regarding KCR. In response, Reddy has instructed Congress MLAs to prioritize raising local issues in Assembly sessions to secure the party’s future performance, while accusing the BRS of conspiring to disrupt the Assembly. The BRS has also expanded its protests to include allegations of corruption regarding land allotments, claiming the government illegally provided land worth approximately Rs 250 crore to Tesseract, a company linked to the Chief Minister’s brother, for only Rs 7 crore. In a counter-move, the Telangana government has established a committee, headed by A. Sridevasena, to investigate land-related irregularities involving several BRS leaders. Adding to the political friction, Chief Minister Reddy recently drew criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after characterizing the Indian political landscape as a contest between the ‘Gandhi Parivar’ and the ‘Sangh Parivar’. ~~Speaking in Nilambur, Kerala, Reddy claimed the Gandhi family represents sacrifice and service, whereas the Sangh Parivar seeks to divide the nation based on religion, caste, and language.~~ The BJP and Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) have criticized these remarks, with BJP spokespersons labeling them as “profoundly ridiculous” and “mental bankruptcy.” Recently, Chief Minister Reddy expanded his political opposition to the central government, condemning the arrest of senior Congress leaders as an “assault on democracy.”
