Telangana welfare scheme legal disputes

The Telangana High Court has been reviewing the legality of the Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak marriage assistance schemes. Initially, the court issued an interim stay on the disbursement of these welfare funds. In a subsequent modification, the court granted partial relief by exempting differently-abled brides from the stay, allowing them to receive an additional 25 percent financial assistance under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act.

During these proceedings, the court questioned the involvement of Members of the Legislative Assembly in distributing welfare cheques, noting there is no statutory mandate for elected officials to personally hand over public funds.

The Telangana government has since appealed to a division bench of the High Court to challenge the stay order. The government argues that the suspension of the schemes has caused hardship for thousands of beneficiaries. Meanwhile, the opposition party, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), has staged protests regarding the administration’s handling of the programs. The matter remains adjourned pending further arguments.
