Telegram blockchain and Web3 integration

Telegram has initiated a series of expansions to integrate blockchain technology and Web3 infrastructure into its messaging platform.

In July 2026, the company announced plans to launch a native, non-custodial crypto wallet for its Gram token. Operating on the TON (The Open Network) blockchain, the wallet was designed to give its roughly 1 billion users direct control over private keys and enable instant, fee-free transfers within the app. Following the announcement, the GRAM token saw an intraday increase of over 8%.

By August 2026, Telegram expanded its technical ambitions by applying to ICANN to operate the “.gram” top-level domain (TLD). Founder Pavel Durov formally submitted the application following the close of ICANN’s 2026 new gTLD application window. If approved, the move would allow users to secure personalized web addresses, such as “username.gram”, and integrate web hosting directly into the Telegram ecosystem. This initiative includes the potential for users to create interactive websites using artificial intelligence via natural-language prompts.

This strategy aims to transform Telegram from a messaging service into broader internet infrastructure, bridging profiles, Mini Apps, and TON wallets to bring Web3 identity to a mainstream audience. However, approval is not guaranteed, as the request must undergo technical, financial, and operational evaluations, alongside potential public or governmental objections. A successful rollout of the “.gram” registry could occur as early as late 2027 or 2028.
