Telemedicine implementation in Spanish healthcare

Overview

Regional healthcare services in Spain are reporting varying levels of integration for remote medical consultations. In Murcia, the Servicio Murciano de Salud (SMS) reported resolving 207,000 interconsultations during the first half of the year with a 95.2% success rate. SMS manager Irene Marín noted the tool helps expedite diagnoses and reduce patient travel across 50 medical specialties.

In Extremadura, remote consultations in primary care reached nearly two million in 2025, representing 27.1% of the region’s 7.36 million appointments. While the volume of remote services has declined from a peak of over three million in 2021, the usage has stabilized since 2023. Evelio Robles, president of the Medical College of Cáceres, observed that while pandemic-era growth has leveled off, administrative telephone consultations remain a stable feature of health center activity.
