Temu EU regulatory compliance and safety measures
Overview
Following a €200 million fine imposed by the European Commission in May 2026 for failing to mitigate the risks of illegal and unsafe products, the e-commerce platform Temu has entered into an action plan to comply with the Digital Services Act (DSA).
The approved plan requires Temu to implement measures such as platform-specific risk assessments, improved content moderation metrics, and investigations into how recommendation algorithms and seller manipulation contribute to the spread of prohibited goods. The company must complete an interim risk assessment by late November 2026.
In response to these regulatory pressures, Temu has pledged to invest approximately $200 million by 2026 to enhance global product safety. This includes developing enhanced control systems, working with over 60 research institutions, and implementing seller training programs. While laboratories within its logistics network have passed independent assessments by Bureau Veritas, the company noted these audits do not constitute formal certification that all products meet European safety requirements.
