Tesco financial performance and market growth
Overview
Tesco has reported strong financial performance for the first half of the year, leading the company to raise its annual adjusted operating profit outlook to a range between £3.15 billion and £3.3 billion. This update increases the previous lower-end guidance of £3 billion.
In the UK, sales (excluding fuel and VAT) reached approximately £33.7 billion to £33.8 billion, representing a 1% like-for-like increase. Growth was driven significantly by digital channels, with online sales rising by 8% to 8.4% and the rapid delivery service, Whoosh, growing by 37%. Whoosh is currently on track to exceed £500 million in annual revenue. Additionally, the premium Finest range saw growth of 8.9%, and the company highlighted the success of its retail media network.
For the six months ending August 29, the retailer reported an adjusted operating profit of £1.783 billion, a 6.3% to 6.5% increase. Despite summer heatwaves and geopolitical tensions, Tesco noted that consumer confidence has remained ‘relatively resilient’. Consequently, the company increased its share buyback programme by £200 million, bringing the total to £950 million. CEO Ken Murphy stated the company is in ‘great shape’ ahead of the Christmas trading period. Following these results, several financial institutions, including Deutsche Bank, raised their price targets for the company.
In Ireland, Tesco saw 12.5% annual sales growth for products from suppliers that won Blas na hÉireann awards. The retailer secured 86 awards for 33 Irish suppliers, including Keohane Seafoods and Irish Country Meats. Tesco Ireland commercial director Joe Manning noted that customers are increasingly seeking award-winning products to ensure quality and taste, driving sales for local producers.
